55% 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐨𝐨 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝! ...𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘋𝘌𝘐𝘉𝘑 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴. June celebrates the LGBTQ+ community with vibrant events, honoring their ongoing fight for equal rights and justice. But, the impetus to change is often halted by a lack of communication and confidence. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐝; 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞.A survey of 1090 people found that 55% of people are too scared to strike up a DEI-based conversation (RightTrack Learning, 2024). Honestly, no one likes to make a mistake. Most people don’t want to offend; the lack of conversation skill and confidence hinders open communication. But, if we stay in our individual cocoons of safety, we will never move toward a more inclusive society. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Justice (DEIBJ) discussions are crucial for creating thriving workplaces and a better world. Start today. Use these strategies to reduce the fear of making a mistake and learn the right tools to engage in DEIBJ conversations. 1. 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐏𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 & 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞Psychological safety fosters an environment where vulnerability is met with curiosity, not judgment. Establish a shared purpose to focus the conversation and ensure everyone understands why it matters.2. 𝐁𝐢𝐚𝐬 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧Uncovering biases is ongoing work. Encourage self-reflection and consider team exercises to collectively identify and mitigate blind spots. See my newsletter this week. 3. 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧Establish communication guidelines, emphasizing inclusive language, active listening. Encourage participants to center marginalized voices and be mindful of their own power and privilege.4. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬The choice between 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒖𝒕depends on the situation and your relationship with the individual. Tailor your approach for maximum impact.5. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 & 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥Prepare responses for common pushback, but also be ready to adapt. Focus on understanding the underlying concerns, addressing them with empathy, facts. These strategies will open the door to communication and build your confidence so that you can reduce your own fear of making a mistake. The practice of setting boundaries is key to living a balanced, fulfilling life for true happiness. When your life is set, your career will fall in line. Keep it simple: You can start today by identifying 1 area where you can establish a new boundary and observe the positive impact it has on your well-being by the end of this week. But, if you’re really ready to reform your boundaries,🔑 Follow these ➟ 5 steps: 1️⃣ Identify Your Current State ➟ List specific areas where you need more space or limits, such as time for lunch breaks, uninterrupted work periods, or emotional space after challenging interactions.2️⃣ Prioritize Your Boundaries ➟ Prioritize your list based on which boundaries will have the most significant impact on your well-being and productivity.3️⃣ Define Specific Limits ➟ Define concrete terms for each priority boundary.Being specific will make it easier to communicate and enforce your boundaries.4️⃣ Communicate Clearly, Succinctly ➟ Communicate your boundaries to the relevant people. Practice. Be firm yet respectful in your communication.5️⃣ Implementation ➟ Implement strategies to enforce your boundaries, then, maintain and adjust. Now, ponder and invest: ↳ Ponder - How do you want to invest in your career and life? ↳ Now, invest wisely, in yourself and your boundaries.----------------------P.S. Where will you invest?Share in comments.👉 Follow me Dr. Kristi Campoe, PhD, RN, CMSRN, CPHQ, sMBA for evidence-based tips for a bold life & career.📘My newsletter The Bold Brief publishes each Wednesday.
