Position Summary:

The Talent, Learning, & Culture (TLC) team contributes to members’ civic leadership by continuing to grow LEE into a strong, vibrant organization of diverse, high-potential, mission-driven people. We are deeply committed to building and maintaining equitable policies, practices, and experiences across teams. The Senior Director, Talent will lead LEE’s talent administration and employee engagement work, including compensation, payroll, benefits, onboarding, all-staff experiences, and internal communications. They will leverage best practices, industry knowledge, and staff feedback to design, implement, and improve TLC’s policies and systems and build an equitable and inclusive experience for all staff.

The successful candidate will be an experienced manager and team leader with a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and a record of success working across functional teams. They will bring significant experience in talent management/human resources including knowledge of HR compliance, benefits administration, employee policies, HR information systems, and employee engagement. The successful candidate will also bring curiosity, a continuous improvement mindset, and a human-centered approach to talent work.

The Senior Director, Talent will lead a small subteam of TLC and will report to the Vice President, Talent, Learning, & Culture.

Position Location:Flexible

Travel Requirements:10-15% for team and org-wide meetings and in support of new hire onboarding

Responsibilities:

Talent Administration: Policies, Benefits, and Support (35%)

Employee Experience and Communication (30%)

  • Lead and project manage the design, improvement, and implementation of effective org-wide and cross-team employee experiences including onboarding, all-staff calls and in-person all-staff gatherings, and employee transitions

  • Regularly analyze the equitable application of talent processes and employee outcomes, e.g., hiring, pay, benefits, and career growth, and communicate results to leadership and all staff

  • Design and implement a proactive, multi-channel communications plan around employee policies including routine and urgent staff updates

  • Partner with the Chief of Staff community to plan and implement internal communications including weekly Top 5 and organizational announcements

Talent Leadership and Advising (25%)

  • Coach and develop TLC team members for individual professional growth, performance, and impact

  • Provide expertise, coaching, and partnership to both novice and experienced people leaders around team structure, policies, and strategic impact, individually and through facilitation of the Managers Community of Practice

  • Collaborate across teams to understand priorities and strategies, contribute to a strong LEE-wide culture, and apply this knowledge to TLC’s work

  • Gather best practices, industry benchmarks, and staff feedback to advise on employee trends, needs, and policies that enable strong performance and minimize organizational risk

Special Projects (10%)

  • Lead or contribute to team-level, org-wide, or cross-team special projects to accelerate impact as assigned by manager or designee

  • Provide short-term coverage during a leave, vacancy, or PTO

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or commensurate years of work experience (If you do not hold a Bachelor’s degree an additional 4 years of relevant experience is required. If you hold an Associate’s degree an additional 2 years of relevant experience is required.)

  • 7+ years of relevant professional work experience including 5+ years of talent management/HR experience

  • Knowledge of HR compliance, benefits administration, employee policies, HR information systems, and employee engagement

  • Experience managing people, with a track record of leading others to achieve ambitious goals

  • Excellent relationship building with a demonstrated ability to work well across lines of difference

  • Understanding of the ethical and confidentiality guidelines within HR workflows

  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders on organizational development, talent, and HR issues

  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze and problem solve situations through technical and adaptive lenses

  • Strong, demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, & inclusion

  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate within a geographically dispersed team

  • Deep passion for educational equity and belief in LEE’s mission and theory of change

Preferred Qualifications:

  • HR credential such as a professional certification (SHRM-SCP, SHRM-CP, PHR, or SPHR) or advanced degree in human resource management

  • 3+ years experience leading a talent function in a virtual environment

  • Experience as an administrator with ADP or a similar enterprise-level payroll and HRIS

  • Exceptional ability to lead through influence in cross-functional teams, even where no direct reporting relationship exists

Physical Requirements & Work Demands:

  • This position is primarily a sedentary role working with colleagues based around the country using remote technologies.

  • The person in this position may need to occasionally move about inside the office to liaise with staff or access office equipment.

  • The person in this position will need to have the ability to travel to in-person meetings in various U.S. cities.

Benefits and Pay

The position level for this role is Senior Director 1 and the corresponding pay range for this position is $110,000.00-$170,880.00. Pay is competitive and based upon relevant experience and cost of labor for your location.
