The Poet's Companion: A Guide to the Pleasures of Writing Poetry
1. Obey the rules of grammar, usage and punctuation. Creative writers should use language inventively, but they do not have a license to ignore the basic rules of good English.
The eight elements of creative writing that are used in short stories and novels are character development, setting, plot, conflict, theme, point of view, tone, and style. Some of these elements are also often used in poems and works of creative nonfiction such as memoir and personal essay.
Tell the real story, not your story. Too many writers of non-fiction try to inject their own points of view, preconceptions or prejudices into a story. Approach every topic with an open mind, and let the facts guide the writing.
Active voice is one of the fundamentals of effective writing. It makes your writing more engaging, direct, and concise. Writing in the active voice requires you to include a clear subject who acts.
Practice makes perfect. Since you're already reading all of the time, you need to be writing all of the time. Put some of the skills and vocabulary you are learning to use. Be willing to try new things.
Starting an ideation session with group brainstorming would make the loudest voices in the room set a determined direction (thus narrowing down the breadth of ideas), and frustrate the most creative minds in the room – instead, begin with an individual component.
