Relationships[]
Shinobu Kocho[]
Kanae was noted to have a very close and loving sisterly relationship with her biological younger sister, Kanae having been seen to be very close to Shinobu since early childhood and having spent their childhoods happily together with their parents.
The sister's bond was incredibly deep and caring, as seen where the two of them both took an oath to protect others from demons and ensure no one else goes through their tragedy upon the two of them surviving the Demon attack that killed their parents. During this time the sisters developed a unique familial dynamic, in which Kanae would frequently make lighthearted, whimsical decisions without thinking first, which in turn causes Shinobu great exasperation and worry due to her elder sister's impulsive behavior. However, Shinobu is still shown to trust her sister deeply and support her sister's decision despite initially disagreeing with her at first, as seen when the two adopted and made off with their adoptive little sister Kanao Tsuyuri.
Later, Kanae's deep love for her sister was truly shown during her last moments after fighting Doma, where Kanae begged Shinobu to leave the Demon Slayer Corps and simply live her life free and happy, stating that the only thing that would make her happy is knowing that Shinobu would be able to live a full happy life and die peacefully as an old woman, showing just how much she loved her younger sister. Shinobu in turn showed her own immense love for her elder sister by swearing that she couldn't possibly live like that and begged her sister to tell her which demon killed her, swearing eternal vengeance against whoever killed her sister.
Kanao Tsuyuri[]
Kanae took an interest in Kanao when she saw her being led away as a slave on the bridge. Along with her sister Shinobu, they purchased Kanao from her master and trained her within the Butterfly Mansion. Kanae defended Kanao when Shinobu worried about her indecisiveness and said that if given time, Kanao's heart could blossom. She was the person who gave Kanao the coin she uses to make decisions whenever she is unable to decide things for herself. After Kanae's death, Kanao found herself unable to cry at the funeral, but wears one of Kanae's hairpins as a memento of her. She remembers Kanae's advice in times of trouble, and thinks highly of her. She expresses deep remorse at the fact that she could not cry during Kanae's funeral.
Sanemi Shinazugawa[]
Not much is currently known about Kanae and Sanemi's relationship. Gyomei Himejima claims that Sanemi had a crush on Kanae, though Sanemi has not professed these feelings himself. It is also unclear if these feelings were reciprocated.
In Kimetsu Academy, Sanemi is claimed to enjoy talking to Kanae in his free time.
Doma[]
Prior to the beginning of the series, Kanae faced off against Doma. The two fought until dawn, forcing Doma to escape before the arrival of the sun. Kanae was left with major injuries and died soon after their battle. Doma himself recognizes Kanae's haori which her younger sister, Shinobu now wears in the present, and recollects how he missed the opportunity to eat her. As stated by him, Doma acknowledged Kanae's strength during their fight and commended her for it, when he faced Shinobu years later.
As revealed by her younger sisters, Kanae was able to tell that Doma lacked the ability to feel and experience genuine human emotions and pitied him for his apathy and inability to feel them. After her death, both Shinobu and Kanao made a point of using this information to insult and degrade Doma out of spite for killing her, genuinely enraging Doma due to them seeing past his supposedly friendly persona.
